Mogadishu, 18 December — The Somali Youth Connect Umbrella (SYC) today commemorated the International Migrants Day through a youth-focused awareness event aimed at addressing the growing challenge of irregular migration (tahriib) and its associated risks.
The commemoration brought together young people and community representatives to engage in discussions on the dangers, social impacts, and long-term consequences of irregular migration. The primary objective of the event was to raise awareness and promote informed decision-making among youth, while encouraging safer and lawful alternatives for mobility and livelihood.
Participants unanimously acknowledged that irregular migration remains a serious and persistent challenge affecting young people across the country. They highlighted the urgent need for sustained awareness campaigns and educational programs to better inform youth about the risks involved, including loss of life, exploitation, and human trafficking.
Somali Youth Connect Umbrella reaffirmed its commitment to empowering young people through advocacy, awareness, and community engagement, and emphasized the importance of collective efforts by civil society, government institutions, and development partners to address the root causes of irregular migration.
The event concluded with a call to action for continued collaboration and the organization of similar initiatives to protect youth and promote safe, dignified, and legal migration pathways.
